Fiberglass vs. Gunite vs. Vinyl: Which Pool Type Is Best for Las Vegas?

If you're planning to build a pool in Las Vegas, one of the first decisions you'll face is also one of the most important — what type of pool should you build? Fiberglass, gunite (shotcrete), and vinyl liner pools each have their advocates, their price points, and their trade-offs. But not all three perform equally well in every climate — and in the Las Vegas desert, that difference matters enormously.
This isn't a generic comparison written for a national audience. This is a breakdown built specifically for homeowners in Southern Nevada, where summer temperatures regularly exceed 110°F, water is loaded with calcium and minerals, UV exposure is relentless, and pools are used nearly 365 days a year. The climate you build in should drive the material you build with — full stop.
Here's everything you need to know.
WHAT IS A GUNITE POOL?
Gunite — also called shotcrete — is a construction method where a mixture of cement, sand, and water is sprayed at high pressure over a rebar framework to form the pool shell. Once cured, the shell is extremely strong, fully customizable in shape and size, and finished with a surface material of your choice — plaster, quartz aggregate, or premium pebble finish.
Gunite pools are built on-site from scratch, which means there are virtually no limitations on shape, depth, size, or features. Every gunite pool is a one-of-a-kind structure custom-engineered for its specific location.
WHAT IS A FIBERGLASS POOL?
Fiberglass pools are pre-manufactured shells built in a factory and delivered to your property by truck. A hole is excavated, the shell is craned into place, and it's connected to your plumbing and equipment. The shape and size you get is determined entirely by what's available from the manufacturer's catalog.
Fiberglass pools typically install faster than gunite and have a smooth, non-porous surface that requires less chemical maintenance in mild climates.
WHAT IS A VINYL LINER POOL?
Vinyl liner pools use a steel, aluminum, or polymer wall panel frame that's installed in an excavated hole, with a vinyl liner stretched over the interior to hold water. The liner is the pool's waterproofing layer and its interior surface.
Vinyl pools are generally the least expensive inground option upfront, and they're common in colder Midwestern and Northeastern markets where the pool industry is more cost-driven.
HOW EACH POOL TYPE PERFORMS IN LAS VEGAS
This is where the real conversation begins — because general comparisons don't tell you what you actually need to know as a Las Vegas homeowner.
Gunite in Las Vegas: Built for This Climate
Gunite is the dominant pool construction method in Southern Nevada for a reason — actually, for several reasons.
Structural strength in desert soil. Las Vegas sits on caliche-heavy, rocky terrain that shifts and expands with temperature changes. Gunite's reinforced concrete shell handles ground movement far better than a prefabricated fiberglass shell or a panel-and-liner system. It's engineered in place, which means it accounts for your specific site conditions.
Complete design freedom. Want an infinity edge overlooking your backyard? A built-in spa with a spillway? A beach entry with a tanning ledge? A sunken bar? A freeform shape that wraps around your existing landscaping? None of that is possible with fiberglass — your options are limited to whatever shapes the manufacturer makes. With gunite, your design is limited only by your imagination and your lot.
Long-term durability. A properly built gunite pool in Las Vegas will last 25 to 50 years with appropriate maintenance and periodic resurfacing. The structural shell itself essentially never needs replacing. You resurface the interior finish every 10 to 15 years — which is far less disruptive and costly than replacing a vinyl liner or addressing the structural issues that fiberglass can develop in desert conditions.
Handles extreme heat. In 115°F summer conditions, materials expand. Fiberglass shells can warp, blister, or develop osmotic blisters over time in intense desert heat — a known issue in hot, arid climates. Gunite's concrete composition is stable across extreme temperature ranges, which is exactly what you need when your pool bakes in the Nevada sun for months at a time.
Fiberglass in Las Vegas: Better in Other Climates
Fiberglass pools perform well in moderate climates with softer water and milder temperatures. In Las Vegas, they face several specific challenges.
Limited shapes and sizes. The biggest practical limitation is design. If you want anything beyond a standard oval, rectangle, or kidney shape, fiberglass simply can't deliver it. For homeowners who want a truly custom backyard — and most Las Vegas buyers do — this is a dealbreaker from the start.
Heat and UV performance. Fiberglass gel coats can fade, oxidize, and chalk in intense UV environments over time. The desert sun is significantly more aggressive than what fiberglass manufacturers typically engineer for in moderate-climate markets.
Delivery and installation limitations. Fiberglass shells are delivered by truck and craned into place. This creates access limitations for certain lot configurations — something that's more relevant in established Henderson and Las Vegas neighborhoods with mature landscaping and narrower side yards.
Hard water compatibility. Las Vegas water is mineral-heavy. Over time, calcium and scale deposits affect fiberglass surfaces differently than gunite — and the smooth gel coat surface, while easy to clean in soft-water markets, can show mineral buildup more visibly in Las Vegas conditions.
Vinyl Liner Pools in Las Vegas: The Wrong Tool for the Job
Vinyl liner pools are rarely built in Las Vegas — and for good reason.
Liner replacement. Vinyl liners need to be replaced every 5 to 9 years. In Las Vegas, where UV exposure and pool chemical demand are both elevated, liners tend toward the shorter end of that range. Each replacement costs between $3,000 and $5,000 or more — an ongoing expense that adds up significantly over a pool's lifetime.
Puncture and tear vulnerability. Vinyl liners can be punctured, torn by pets, or damaged by debris. A torn liner is an immediate water loss and repair situation. In a desert climate where every gallon matters, that's a real concern.
Resale and perception. In the Las Vegas luxury market, vinyl liner pools are perceived as a budget product — and they'll be reflected as such in your home's resale value. Buyers in this market expect a quality inground pool, and a vinyl liner product doesn't meet that expectation.
THE HONEST VERDICT FOR LAS VEGAS HOMEOWNERS
Gunite: Design flexibility — Unlimited. Lifespan in Las Vegas — 25–50+ years. Desert heat performance — Excellent. Hard water compatibility — Excellent. Resale value — Highest. Custom features — Yes, anything. Recommended for Las Vegas — Yes.
Fiberglass: Design flexibility — Limited to catalog shapes. Lifespan in Las Vegas — 15–25 years. Desert heat performance — Fair. Hard water compatibility — Fair. Resale value — Moderate. Custom features — Very limited. Recommended for Las Vegas — With reservations.
Vinyl Liner: Design flexibility — Moderate. Lifespan in Las Vegas — 10–20 years. Desert heat performance — Poor. Hard water compatibility — Poor. Resale value — Lowest. Custom features — Limited. Recommended for Las Vegas — No.
If you're building a pool in Las Vegas and you want it to last, look stunning, hold its value, and handle everything the desert throws at it — gunite is the answer. It's not the cheapest option on day one, but it's the most cost-effective decision over the life of your pool and your home.
