10 Pool Maintenance Tips Every Las Vegas Homeowner Needs This Summer

If you own a pool in Las Vegas, you already know that maintaining it is nothing like what you'd read in a general pool care guide. The same tips written for homeowners in Florida or the Midwest simply don't account for 115°F summers, relentless UV exposure, hard Colorado River water, and an evaporation rate that can drop your water level inches in a single week.
Las Vegas pools are used harder, exposed to more extreme conditions, and demand more consistent attention than pools in virtually any other market in the country. The good news is that once you understand what your pool actually needs in this climate — and build a simple routine around it — keeping it clean, balanced, and beautiful is very manageable.
Here are 10 pool maintenance tips every Las Vegas homeowner should know heading into summer.
1. TEST YOUR WATER CHEMISTRY AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK
In most climates, testing pool water once a week is sufficient. In Las Vegas, twice a week is the minimum — and during peak summer months, every other day is even better.
Here's why: extreme heat accelerates chemical consumption dramatically. Chlorine burns off faster, pH levels shift more quickly, and the balance you achieved on Monday can look completely different by Thursday. Catching imbalances early is always cheaper and easier than correcting a full-blown algae problem or a pool that's turned green.
Target these ranges for Las Vegas pools:
- Free chlorine: 2.0 – 4.0 ppm
- pH: 7.4 – 7.6
- Total alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
- Calcium hardness: 200 – 400 ppm
- Cyanuric acid (stabilizer): 30 – 50 ppm
2. UNDERSTAND YOUR HARD WATER PROBLEM
Las Vegas has some of the hardest water in the United States. Water sourced from the Colorado River carries high levels of calcium and magnesium, and over time that mineral content builds up on your pool surfaces, tile lines, and equipment.
Left unchecked, calcium scaling causes white chalky deposits on your tile, rough texture on your pool interior, and damage to your pump and filter system. Test your calcium hardness regularly and use a sequestering agent to keep minerals in suspension. If you're already seeing heavy scaling on your tile line, that's a job for a professional — and one worth addressing before it becomes a resurfacing conversation.
3. RUN YOUR PUMP LONGER THAN YOU THINK YOU NEED TO
A common mistake Las Vegas pool owners make is running their pump on the same schedule they used during cooler months. In summer, your pool needs more filtration — not less.
As a general rule, run your pump a minimum of 8 to 10 hours per day during summer months. If your pool gets heavy use or you're running a water feature, push that closer to 12 hours. Variable speed pumps make this easier on your electricity bill — they can run longer at lower speeds and still move the same volume of water for less money.
4. SHOCK YOUR POOL WEEKLY DURING SUMMER
Regular shocking — adding a high dose of chlorine to eliminate contaminants — is a non-negotiable part of summer pool care in Las Vegas. Heavy sunlight, high bather loads, and heat all deplete your chlorine rapidly, and shocking once a week keeps bacteria and algae from getting a foothold.
Shock your pool in the evening rather than during the day. Daytime shocking in Las Vegas sun causes chlorine to burn off before it can do its job. Evening shocking lets the chemicals work through the night while your pump runs.
5. KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR WATER LEVEL
Las Vegas pools can lose 1 to 2 inches of water per week to evaporation during peak summer — sometimes more during the hottest stretches. That's not a leak. That's just the desert.
Check your water level weekly and top it off with a hose as needed. Running your pool with a low water level strains your pump, can damage your skimmer, and leaves unsightly mineral deposits on your waterline tile as water evaporates and leaves calcium behind.
6. CLEAN YOUR FILTER REGULARLY
Your filter works overtime in summer — catching sunscreen residue, debris, insects, dust, and everything else a busy pool accumulates. A clogged filter can't do its job, which means your water stays dirtier for longer and your pump has to work harder.
Check your filter pressure gauge regularly. If it reads 8–10 PSI above its clean baseline, it's time to clean. For cartridge filters, rinse every 2–4 weeks during heavy use season. For DE filters, backwash when pressure rises and recharge with fresh DE.
7. BRUSH YOUR POOL WALLS AND FLOOR WEEKLY
Even with good chemistry, algae spores cling to pool surfaces — especially in corners, steps, and shaded areas. Weekly brushing disrupts those spores before they bloom into a full algae problem.
Use a nylon brush for standard plaster and quartz finishes. If your pool has a pebble interior, a slightly stiffer brush works better for getting into the texture. Brush toward the main drain so your filter can capture what you've loosened.
8. USE A STABILIZER TO PROTECT YOUR CHLORINE
Cyanuric acid — also called chlorine stabilizer — is essential in Las Vegas. Without it, UV rays from the desert sun can destroy up to 90% of your pool's free chlorine within just a couple of hours of direct sunlight. That's not an exaggeration.
Maintaining proper stabilizer levels (30–50 ppm) acts as a sunscreen for your chlorine, dramatically extending how long it stays active in the water. If you're going through chlorine at an alarming rate, low stabilizer is often the culprit.
9. CONSIDER A VARIABLE SPEED PUMP IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE
If you're still running an older single-speed pump, this summer is a great time to make the switch. Variable speed pumps use significantly less energy, run quieter, and can be programmed to run longer at lower speeds — which is exactly what your Las Vegas pool needs in summer.
The energy savings in a market where pools run nearly year-round add up quickly. Many Las Vegas homeowners recover the cost of a variable speed pump upgrade within two to three years through electricity savings alone.
10. SCHEDULE A PROFESSIONAL INSPECTION BEFORE SUMMER HITS
The best thing you can do before Las Vegas summer arrives is have a professional eye on your pool and equipment. A pre-season inspection catches worn seals, failing equipment, surface issues, and chemistry imbalances before they become expensive mid-summer emergencies.
Nobody wants to deal with a pump failure or an algae bloom in July when temperatures are at their peak and your backyard is in full use. A quick inspection in March or April gives you the whole summer to enjoy your pool — not troubleshoot it.
